Be Like John
Dec 7, 2017
Clearly, John the Baptist was NOT from Minnesota, locusts and wild honey aside. Had he lived in the wilds of Katherine Abbot park the Gospel message would look something like this:
“Thanks for coming. Way to take time out of your day to come out here into the woods to hear me speak. I appreciate your interest in the faith. You’re on the right track. But listen, there’s more. Repent of your sins! Participate in the baptism of repentance! Another one mightier than I is coming after me. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit! It will be awesome. An amazing experience. Hungry? There’s a potluck later. #noworries”
Did you hear the GOOD NEWS in the middle? Or did it get lost in his Midwestern attitude? You know, that mentality where we don’t want to offend anyone. “Minnesota Nice” we call it. I wonder how “nice” it really is? Would I have entered the waters after Mahtomedi John’s words?
This photo is often my Facebook profile picture. I LOVE it and I can’t really explain why. But it looks like a woman who has encountered a man named John in the desert, clothed in camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist. A woman who heard him passionately proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of her sins. And that One mightier than him will follow… One who will walk beside her, heal her pain and make her whole. One who will take hold of her heart, mind, and will in a total dual-surrender of abiding love.
Who wouldn’t want to hear that message? Who wouldn’t want a life animated by that all-encompassing joy? Who wouldn’t want to be infiltrated and captivated by perfect Love?
So why don’t we share that Good News? #BeLikeJohn #BetheMessenger
