Catechesis Tradendae

May 5, 2015

Catechesis Tradendae, an Apostolic Exhortation given the Church by Pope John Paul II, speaks to the right of the people of God to receive catechesis and the duty of the Church to provide that catechesis.  The document states: “Church is bidden by God and by events - each of them a call from Him - to renew her trust in catechetical activity as a prime aspect of her mission. She is bidden to offer catechesis her best resources in people and energy, without sparing effort, toil or material means, in order to organize it better and to train qualified personnel. This is no mere human calculation; it is an attitude of faith. And an attitude of faith always has reference to the faithfulness of God, who never fails to respond.”

Given the importance and necessity of catechetical ministry and its foundational position in the mission of the Church, I ask that everyone give prayerful consideration to committing to catechetical ministry.  The following are ministries that need to be filled in the next couple of months:

VBS Station Leaders:  Adults who lead and guide crew leaders and their crews at the various stations (Opening celebration, closing celebration, snacks, science/crafts, games, Bible lessons, and video station).

Crew Leaders:  Young people sixth grade and older to lead crews of children (5-7 children per crew) from station to station and participating with the young people and sharing your faith.  Youth volunteer ministers are eligible for take part in CrewLeave in the afternoons.

Chaperones for Crew LEAVE:  Adults that travel to the various sites and supervise and assist the young people.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word leader:  The CLOTW leader prepares to present the scripture readings to elementary students during the Liturgy of the Word during Mass.  There is usually 20-25 minutes available for this presentation.  CLOTW takes place at the 9am Mass and the 11am Mass.

Sunday Faith Formation Catechist:  Faith Formation for preschool and kindergarten students is available Sunday mornings during the 9am Mass.  Catechists are needed for this ministry.

Wednesday Evening Catechists:  There are two session of Faith Formation every week at 4:15 and 6:15.  There are approximately 300 young people participating in Faith Formation, consequently there is a great need for catechists and co-catechists – we need 40 catechists as well as hall monitors and special events coordinators.
