Food Shelf Weekly Needs
Weekly Food Shelf Needs (Fall 2010)

Mission
The mission of the Mahtomedi Area Food Shelf is to provide nutritional assistance to individuals and families in need living within the Mahtomedi Community. We achieve our mission by securing wholesome food and offering compassionate and courteous service, and conscientiously managing our resources through efficient business practices.

Structure
The local churches, the parishioners of St. Jude of the Lake, the students and families of St. Jude of the Lake School, the Mahtomedi Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, local civic groups, local businesses and other residents of Mahtomedi, support the Mahtomedi Area Food shelf. The Mahtomedi Area Food Shelf has a committee composed of representatives of the area churches and civic groups. The committee provides support to the coordinator and assists in fulfillment of the mission. The committee also provides connections to the supporting groups and the broader community.

Operation
The Mahtomedi Area Food Shelf has a coordinator and an assistant who are employed a total of 24 hours a week.

The Food Shelf services the Mahtomedi School District #832. Over 30 volunteers come in on a daily and weekly basis to put food donations on the shelves, pack orders, distribute orders, pick-up food from barrels at local grocery stores and deliver excess bread items to other local grocery stores. The MAFS also has groups of children come in from the local schools to help out on regular basis for community service hours.

Currently, the pick-up hours for the clients are Tuesday from 1:00 – 3:00 pm and Thursday from 1:00 – 3:00 pm and the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Clients receive 7 days worth of food including 1˝ gallons of 1% milk, 1 dozen eggs, and 12 slices of American cheese and 1 lb of ground beef.

The MAFS has over 200 clients and services and average of 77 households per month.

New Clients are required to fill out a form with basic information and are also required to read the Food Shelf’s Guidelines and initial that they understand what the guidelines are. Once a year they are required to fill out a TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program) form. At the time of pick-up the clients are asked to show a form of identification with their current address on it.

The clients are entered into a database which keeps track of usage, amount of food given, household members and TEFAP information.

The Food Shelf is a member of Second Harvest Heartland Food Bank. This allows the Food Shelf to purchase non-perishable food items when there is a need and to purchase meats and dairy products at a discounted rate. In order to be a member of Second Harvest there are guidelines that need to be followed, including having each client fill out a TEFAP form.

If you wish to donate food you can drop it off at the St. Jude of the Lake parish office Monday-Friday 9:00–3:30 pm. If you are dropping off at other times there are drop off sites located at the church entrances, Festival Foods in White Bear Lake and Cub Foods in Stillwater.
