The Anointing of the Sick is for those persons close to death, and also for any of the baptized faithful whose health is seriously impaired by sickness, weakened by old age, or readying for surgery for a serious illness. Therefore, the anointing should not be postponed until a person is near death but should take place at a time that allows the sick person and their loved ones to participate in the sacrament.
